The Center's History

1969

Kendrick House established as the Afro-American Cultural Center

1970

Urban Center for Black Studies established in Poughkeepsie's Black community; closed in 1980.

1976

Intercultural Center established in basement of Lathrop House.

1990

Intercultural Center moves to Blegen House on Collegeview Avenue.

1991

Plans approved for the conversion of the former coal bin building into a large center.

1993

Construction of the new building completed.

1998

Intercultural Center renamed ALANA Center, an acronym to include various communities of color.
