Handouts

By Ricardo Almonte, '08
I sat there scared, trying to get lost in thought, denying the fact that I’d become the praised, somewhat unwilling center of the universe. I was more story than man, declining polite offers of coffee with sugar and cream, a silver spoon slid loudly in my direction.

The argument next to me was an infant that grew into a healthy young dispute. Shock, anger, embarrassment, shame, and tiny teeth poked their way through virgin gums.

When he spoke, he mentioned "those people." Melanin and concrete, skin colors and familiar spaces, brown and grey, flesh and stone swirled around my ears and became the apple of my mind’s eye.

She was on my side, but she told me that it was bigger than me and that she was just saying what she felt. But I thought I just heard her rescue me.
