Honorable Mention
There is Only One Way by Angelic X. Sosa ‘08
she impassionately kissed him
not because he deserved it
but because "it was the right thing to do"
the repulsion she pushed down
ignored it for tomorrow.
maybe because his skin was too much like hers
maybe because she’s always falling for the skin too unlike hers.
the love for another she pushed down
ignored it for tomorrow.
enough to politely make conversation
gestures she was taught to do
believing in less than her worth
maybe because her parents would approve of his skin
maybe because her parents would never approve of any other skin.
the pride she pushed down
ignored it for tomorrow.
and tomorrow came too soon
(or not soon enough?)
and the repulsion she pushed down-
only to come spitting out in a fiery rebirth of:
self-understanding. self-love. self-acceptance.
impassionately she rejected his pleas
passionately she learned to accept her desires.
impassionately she rejected his promises
passionately she reclaimed her worth.
he was, after all, only an honorable mention.
